Yunyi Guan works in video, photography, sculpture, installation and drawing , with an approach centered on memory and material. Drawing family images on recovered polystyrene—material once used for home insulation—the colors emerge from relief to reflect the blur of fragmented memory. For Guan, drawing these images brings the past to the surface, renewing it to create a new presence of those no longer there. The work uses the texture and weight of materials to hold and activate memory.
