Asli Hatipoglu is an interdisciplinary artist and chef/cook. In her work, she uses food as a focal point in order to investigate interwoven themes of history, hunger, science, politics, ancestral knowledge, spirituality, and mental health. Through the participatory dinners or events that she curates, which often tell stories from the past, she creates situations to observe social dynamics around dinner table. From working with micro-scale bacteria and yeasts responsible for fermentation to invasive species such as the Japanese knotweed, Asli is engaged in critical research. She critically investigates human connections with the environment through the study of bacteria, yeasts and insects such as the domesticated silkworm. By researching production supply chains through performative acts, she highlights how humans impact other living organisms.
