Kombucha Paper Letters (2020–2021) is a research project Asli Hatipoglu began during her residency at the Food Lab of the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht. She grows kombucha SCOBYs under varying conditions — different temperatures, water, tea, sugar and liquid depths — and treats their slow transformation as a mirror for human relationships, from self-reflection to the link between gut health and the mind. She then uses the dried kombucha material as a surface, type-writing onto it or printing text with photo-polymer plates to record her own process.
